VPN test myths beginners should ignore

A website cannot reliably prove that a VPN is enabled, that all traffic is tunneled, that DNS is protected, or that you are anonymous. Beginners get hurt by pages that skip those limits. Ignore the myths below and measure what you can: the public IP this browser uses, before and after you change the connection.

The honest tool for that comparison is the VPN test. It is not a detector.

Myth: “This page detected your VPN”

No trustworthy browser page can see the VPN app. It can see an IP, maybe an ISP string, maybe a country label. Hosting-range lists are guesses and can be wrong. Privacy Leak Check will not print “VPN detected.”

Myth: “If the country looks wrong, the VPN failed”

Geolocation databases lag. Dedicated exits can look like datacenters. Why a VPN location can look wrong is the expected explanation when the IP string changed and the flag did not. Trust the address before the map.

Myth: “If the IP did not change, the VPN is fake”

The app can look connected while this browser is excluded. Split tunneling, extensions, and IPv6 gaps produce that pattern. VPN connected but the IP is not changing is the checklist. It is a routing problem for this app, not a courtroom verdict about the vendor.

Myth: “Any IPv6 address means a leak”

Myth: “This leak test includes DNS”

This project does not include DNS leak testing. If another site shows a DNS panel, that is their test, not this one. Do not read ICE candidates or IPv6 lookups as DNS.

Myth: “A changed IP means I am untrackable”

Myth: “Incognito hides the IP”

Myth: “One refresh is a complete audit”

A single lookup is a sample. Timeouts happen. Recheck. Change one variable. Do not treat a privacy score as medical, legal, or absolute advice. This site’s score, when shown, is a transparent local checklist with listed deductions — not a shield certificate.

Myth: “Websites can always tell you use a VPN”

Some sites try. Lists of hosting ranges exist. They produce false positives and false negatives. A changed IP after you toggle the app is a useful clue that this browser’s path moved. It is not a brand detector and not proof that every packet on the machine is tunneled. This page will not pretend otherwise.

Myth: “If I pay more, leak tests become unnecessary”

What to do instead

  1. Look up the IP on What is my IP.
  2. Save a baseline, toggle the VPN once, compare on the VPN test.
  3. If you use calls, add WebRTC. If you are on dual-stack, add IPv6.
  4. Stop at observation plus cautious inference. Leave “definitely leaking” for cases you have actually compared.
